The Assault On U.S. Democracy Is Not Over

Talking Points Memo, one of the better websites for short and long-read news stories, this morning posted ‘Our Slow-Moving National Crisis Is Far From Over‘ wherein the reporter writes, in part:

Surveying the landscape of American politics 28 months after an attempted autocoup, what’s most striking is how little has changed. From a historical perspective, we remain at a fork in the road and it’s not clear which path we will take. The fate of the Republic, as grandiose and perhaps overstated as it may sound, still hangs in the balance.

In many respects, the attempted coup is not over. Most of the leaders of the insurrection remain at large. Many of them still serve in Congress. One of them is his party’s de facto nominee for president.

While I agree overall with the TPM reporter, I do not believe warnings of a real danger to the still-hanging fate of the Republic is grandiose or overstated.

On Tuesday, 19 September, the Kansas City Star posted ‘Republican candidate for Missouri governor vows to burn books after viral flamethrower video‘

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows state Sen. Bill Eigel, a Weldon Spring Republican who is running for governor in 2024, and state Sen. Nick Schroer, a St. Charles Republican, using flamethrowers to torch a stack of boxes at a fundraising event in Defiance in St. Charles County on Friday.

On the same day, a video posted on a social media platform shows 2024 presidential candidate, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, saying companies should “absolutely” fire striking workers – you know, those working Americans who must strike for such things as safer working conditions and better wages.

On Sunday, the last day of Rosh Hashanah, Donald Trump posted on his social media platform a special greeting to American Jewish citizens by accusing them of voting to “destroy America and Israel”:

“Just a quick reminder for liberal Jews who voted to destroy America & Israel because you believed in false narratives!.” It is safe to say the POS was referring to the American Jewish support for Joe Biden in the 2020 election. He ended his best-wishes warning with: “Let’s hope you learned from your mistake & make better choices moving forward!”

In 2021, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) published results of a study that finds the United States of America is a “backsliding” democracy.

“The visible deterioration of democracy in the United States, as seen in the increasing tendency to contest credible election results, the efforts to suppress participation (in elections), and the runaway polarisation … is one of the most concerning developments.”
