Is The Paid Sick Leave Bill The Cure? For This Pandemic, Not So Much…

The “Coronavirus Bill” passed Saturday by the U.S. House of Representatives is being hailed by Democrats and some Republicans as the much needed relief for American workers. But the fine print tells a much different story.

The bill actually does not cover 80 percent of workers. Large companies like McDonalds and Amazon are not required to provide paid sick leave and small companies with fewer than 50 employees can get a ‘hardship’ deferment. Combined, that makes up 80 percent of workers – and most of the remaining 20 percent of sick/infected/recovering workers will get about ten days of paid leave.

But, in a letter to House Democrats, Speaker Pelosi was happy to celebrate her caving to Republicans and the ‘bipartisanship’ bill:

“I am very proud to write that the provisions we put forth with your input, including paid sick leave, paid family and medical leave, enhanced Unemployment Insurance, food security initiatives and free and widespread testing, are all included in this agreement.”

Well, I feel better already.
