“As We Sit Here”

In the 24 hours since former special counsel Robert Mueller warned lawmakers about Russia’s past, present (they’re doing it “as we sit here”), and future meddling in America’s elections, of course much has been written, spoken, and tweeted about who were the winners and losers after the six hours Mueller sat before two House committees.

Without a doubt, the big loser is American Democracy.

Following Mueller’s warnings, Democrats on Wednesday thought it would be a good idea to pass a couple of bills that would require election campaigns to go immediately to the FBI and Federal Election Commission about any “foreign offers of assistance”.

But Senate Republicans blocked those bills as well as a cybersecurity bill that would aid senators and their staff with (voluntary) cyber assistance on personal devices and accounts.

Said Republican senator Mitch “Moscow Mitch” McConnell about one election security bill: “so partisan it received just one Republican vote over in the House.”

So, McConnell and Republicans think election security is nothing more than partisan Democrats attempting to secure America’s elections from Russian interference.
