NARAL Pro-Choice America Condemns National Abortion Ban Legislation Introduced by Republican Senator
Washington, DC — Today, after months of the Republican Party disingenuously downplaying the threat that MAGA extremists pose to abortion access, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is set to introduce a national abortion ban in the U.S. Senate. This reaffirms that Republicans always intended to restrict abortion access at the federal level should they win back control of Congress in the November midterm elections.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Let’s be clear about what a bill like this would do—it could put a ban on abortion in place in every state in our country, including blue states that have laws protecting abortion rights and access on the books. This is about who gets to decide what’s right for our lives and our families. Should it be a person who is pregnant? Or Lindsey Graham and MAGA Republicans?”
These actions come in the aftermath of the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. This cruel decision opened the door for extremist state lawmakers to enforce extreme bans on abortion. Roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion, and thus far, 14 states have bans in place and many more are rushing to do the same. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
