Bob Dole served in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division as second lieutenant during World War II. Battle injuries from machine gun fire to his spine and arms nearly killed him and left him permanently disabled. He earned two Purple Hearts and two awards of the Bronze Star.
In February of this year, Dole issued a statement regarding his latest battle:
Recently, I was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. My first treatment will begin on Monday. While I certainly have some hurdles ahead, I also know that I join millions of Americans who face significant health challenges of their own.
