Medgar Evers was murdered 12 June 1963 in a suburban neighborhood of Jackson Mississippi. The assassin, a white male, shot Evers in the back as he was about to enter his home. Evers was 37.
Medgar Evers was a United States Army World War II veteran who took part in the Normandy Invasion. He was honourably discharged in 1946 at the rank of sergeant.
Medgar Evers is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Medgar Evers was a distinguished member of NAACP, serving as the first field secretary in the south. Within three years he had nearly doubled NAACP membership in Mississippi to more than 15,000.
One of Medgar Evers’ first assignments was investigating the murder of Emmett Till.
It took 31 years to bring Medgar Evers’ murderer to justice.
