Monday Ménage: Latin Accent. Access To Ballot. Favor Freedom.

Navarro. Abrams. Douglass.

Why am I a liberal? Because I don’t forget that I’m an immigrant and that I’m a Hispanic and that I have a Latin accent when I speak English, and I want to defend those who get racially profiled by people who would discriminate against us? Ana Navarro.

When marginalized groups finally gained access to the ballot, it took time for them to organize around opposition to the specific forms of discrimination and mistreatment that continued to plague them – and longer still for political parties and candidates to respond to such activism. Stacey Abrams.

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Frederick Douglass.
