International Workers Day

Happy May Day

International Workers’ Day was established to honour lives lost at the Haymarket Affair / Haymarket Massacre that took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886. The confrontation between police and labour protesters who were marching for an eight-hour work day became the symbol of the international struggle for workers’ rights. The ‘Affair’ created widespread hysteria directed against immigrants and labour leaders.

In many countries, International Workers’ Day has been morphed into May Day (May 1).

Sixty countries around the world celebrate this day as a holiday. Not the US of A.
